How the placebo effect can be used in health care and treatment
Do you like this story?
Once somebody does the "impossible," the boundaries change. As a physician, Chopra sees "miracles" on a regular basis. They also sees the limits that people live under based on "beliefs," which are thoughts people think are true.
In a discussion along with his nice mate, Dr. Wayne Dyer, a widely known psychologist & speaker on self-development & higher consciousness, the men discuss the commentary by another doctor mate, O. Carl Simonson, M.D., a famous pioneer in guided imagery with cancer patients. Simonson was commenting on the injustice the media has done to the public by declaring a few isolated incidents to be "reality."
AIDS becomes deadly:
On New Dimension Radio, Simonson said that they had handled a couple of AIDS cases with complete & speedy success before 1981 - before the media sensensationalized the news by declaring that AIDS was universally known to be a deadly disease. & that is exactly what it became because of the new public belief that AIDS was deadly.
Placebo response:
Chopra then described the well-known "placebo response." In any study that makes use of a control group with a "placebo" pill or treatment offered for an disease, about 1/3 of the group will get better anyway, no matter what the "sugar pill" is meant to help with - migraines, blood pressure or ulcers. The same pill "cures" about 1/3 of the people because of their belief that they are taking something that will help them.
The next day, the man coughed up blood; the next seven days they was hospitalized; the next month they was dead. Chopra returned to examine an x-ray taken five years earlier on the same man, a compulsory policyowner in which an x-ray was necessary of all newly-hired employees. The x-ray showed the exact-same lesion. Chopra speculated whether they died of the cancer OR the "thought" of cancer, which was called
Then Chopra described a colleague, a doctor who was a chain smoker, who had a hacking cough for weeks. They refused a chest x-ray because they was afraid it would show cancer. So they delayed the check for several more weeks. Finally, day in the work of a coughing spell, Chopra made him take an x-ray of his lungs. They both saw the results & immediately recognized that the man had a coin-sized cancerous tumor in his chest.
