The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) committee on

complementary and alternative medicine stressed at the close of its meetings

here Monday the necessity of following up erroneous applications of

alternative medicine in GCC states. The committee also asserted the importance of warning the GCC citizens

against such practices as well as precluding any means of illicit gains

through such fields. Dr. Khalid Al-Saleh, tumors treatment consultant and member of GCC for

complementary and alternative medicine, said in a statement to KUNA following

his participation in the meetings that, "GCC committee for alternative

medicine recommended submitting the GCC plan for alternative medicine to the

executive body to be approved."

He added that, "the committe also asked member states to form national

committees for alternative medicine in order to enact a law for alternative

medicine for each respective states."

Al-Saleh also said that the committee recommended member states to devise

policies and regulations organizing the activities of the alternative medicine

and discussed the alternative medicine draft law proposed by Bahrain and

approved by the council of GCC health ministers last February as a guiding law. He added that the committee has set up during its two-day meetings the

general framework for the alternative medicine as well as a blueprint for the

establishing GCC council for alternative medicine, besides approving a working

paper for a research study themed, "Status quo for Alternative and

Complementary Medicine in GCC states."

Further, Al-Saleh said in case the draft law is approved by the GCC, it

will, "curb the phenomenon of exploiting patients, particularly those of

incurable diseases like cancer."

Finally, he expressed his thanks for the GCC ministers of health for

supporting the activities of the committee as well as the executive bureau of

the council of the GCC ministers of health and members of GCC committee on

complementary and alternative medicine
