How to Take Care of a Baby's Skin

How to Take Care of a Baby's Skin

Babies are generally born with pure, flawless skin. However, if the skin is not taken care of properly, it can develop damaging effects over time due to sun exposure, weather conditions and even the type of soap you use. Here are some tips on how to care for your child's skin.

Instructions

Always use sunscreen. A young child that loves to play outside doesn’t understand the harmful effects of the sun. Babies and small children should always be protected with a higher SPF sunscreen, and there are several different types on the market that are formulated especially for them. Follow the directions on the package and reapply the sunscreen as necessary. Try to limit the time that your children play outside when it is during the peak hours of the day, especially the afternoon, because the UV index is higher and can cause more severe sunburns.

Protect skin from the elements. If you live in area that has extreme weather conditions, it can take a serious toll on your baby’s skin. The skin can become chapped, cracked and red, thus leading to an uncomfortable, cranky baby. Try to protect the entire body with the proper clothing at all times when you have to be out in cold weather. Use a mild baby lotion to soothe chapped skin so that it can heal. Whenever you bathe your baby, use specially formulated baby soaps that don’t have added ingredients and fragrances because this can irritate the skin even further. If you aren’t sure what to use, ask for a recommendation from a pharmacist or pediatrician.

Instill the value of good skin care early on. Apply a mild baby lotion after bathing. Babies learn by touch more than anything else, and will enjoy a soothing massage after a bath. Doing this every time will not only keep your child’s skin moisturized, but will show your baby that it is good habit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult a pediatrician for advice.
  • Use mild soaps and lotions on your baby's skin for less irritation.
  • As your child gets older, teach him about the importance of good skin care.
